Sony Online Entertainment, Inc. (SOE)—the online gaming division of Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment—is a worldwide leader in multiplayer online gaming. They create, develop and deliver online entertainment for the personal computer, console, wireless and online markets. With more than 13 million registered users, SOE’s award-winning website, The Station® (www.station.com), hosts a variety of entertaining games and player communities spanning numerous genres.
SOE’s online gaming popularity is based on constantly evolving quests and daily content updates. Localizing their site would require daily and simultaneous update releases in several languages. For SOE, it was critical to find a localization partner that could overcome the technical challenges of database generated content. At the same time, they needed a localization partner that could handle the logistical challenges of coordinating large teams of translators in order to achieve volume levels of over 25,000 words per day. Thousands of items and keywords that the game functionality depended upon needed to be localized in a consistent, yet rapid, manner. All of this had to happen while ensuring the linguistic consistency upon which the gaming software depended.
To accomplish the demands of this project required an automated workflow system. Scribe Consulting immediately developed dedicated teams for each language and integrated their efforts through the Global Vault available over Scribe Consulting’s Extranet. Terminology management tools were implemented to allow for consistency in a constantly fluid environment. The Global Vault system was also integrated with SOE’s content management system, allowing daily updates of course material to trigger immediate notification to vendors of tasks awaiting completion.
The automated nature of Scribe Consulting’s workflow was incredibly valuable for SOE. It allowed them to avoid time zone differences, delivering the advantage of a continuous global network of vendors. It provided an environment where all team members had real time access to shared terminology management tools. Scribe Consulting delivered a massive volume of material quickly. They localized both site content and SQL 2000 in-game text content for a variety of games which amounted to 2.3 million words in just one quarter. Most importantly, this relationship allowed SOE the benefit of localizing a high volume of words daily, while not being burdened with the coordination of both internal and external resources to make it happen.
